Gongbi painting · Hand-mounting · Small classes

Every feather,
painted by hand.

Li Han Chen is a Seattle-based artist practicing gongbi, the meticulous-brush tradition of Chinese flower-and-bird painting. Original work on silk and paper, hand-painted round fans, traditional hand-mounting, and small in-person classes.

Paint

Gongbi flower-and-bird paintings on silk and paper, built up in fine lines and thin layers of color.

Mount

Traditional hand-mounting for paintings, fans, and scrolls.

Learn

Small in-person classes in brush control and gongbi technique. Beginners welcome.

About the materials

Processed silk and sized paper are treated so that fine lines and layered color stay crisp instead of bleeding. This is what makes gongbi’s detail possible.

Round Fans

Each fan is painted by hand and mounted by hand. Display it on a wall, a shelf, or a stand, or give it as a gift that no one else will have.

The Art of Hand-Mounting

Chinese mounting is a craft of patience: backing, pressing, and finishing by hand so a painting lies flat and lasts. I mount my own work, and I can mount yours: paintings, fans, calligraphy, or family keepsakes.
